LG Kavinder reviews progress of eco-smart new airport terminal at Leh
Leh, Nov 24: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, on Sunday conducted an on-site inspection of the upcoming New Terminal Building at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh, to review construction progress and assess the integration of modern, eco-friendly technologies.
The Lt Governor expressed satisfaction over the pace of work and praised the project team for adopting advanced green features, including a first-of-its-kind geothermal temperature-regulation system, extensive solar power utilisation and eco-sensitive architecture designed specifically for Ladakh’s high-altitude conditions. He said the new terminal is poised to become a benchmark for sustainable infrastructure in Himalayan regions.
Gupta said the terminal, once completed, will significantly boost passenger handling capacity and strengthen Ladakh’s air connectivity, while also reflecting the region’s unique cultural identity. He appreciated the efforts to incorporate traditional Ladakhi motifs and design elements into the structure, ensuring that the terminal blends modern amenities with the region’s heritage.
He emphasised that the project aligns with Ladakh’s broader vision of becoming a carbon-neutral Union Territory and said the green features of the new airport terminal underline the administration’s commitment to innovation, environmental protection and high-quality infrastructure development.
Reviewing key components — including passenger amenities, safety systems, terminal layout and airside works — the Lt Governor urged officials to maintain momentum and ensure the project is completed within the stipulated timeline to meet Ladakh’s increasing travel demand.
Project Director A. Umashankar briefed the Lt Governor on the terminal’s upcoming operational features, such as aerobridges, automated systems, expanded circulation areas and additional departure gates. He said the terminal is slated for completion by April–May 2026.
