Let’s dare to care deeply!

Are we living in an era where the skill of listening is buried under the noise of endless notifications?

They say ‘to err is human, to forgive divine,’ but in this 21st century mise-en-scène, it seems we’re neither admitting errors nor practising much divinity. In an era of frenetic social media interactions, the world is hardening its shell day by day; it is dominated by the headlines of conflict, divisiveness, and sheer insensitivity.

It is the time when the power of simple acts of kindness and softness never feels more potent or necessary, in fact, it is looked down upon. The plague and pandemic of insensitivity is silently ravaging our society.

In our maniacally fast-paced, achievement-oriented culture, it’s all too easy to overlook the simple joys and acts of kindness that make life truly enriching.

Do we consider the little kind details, the beautiful moments that make our hearts go Awww, the split seconds that make us melt deep down? Someone taking that extra time to choose the perfect bar of chocolate for you, knowing your tastes and preferences or something specific they like that they want you to try too.

Or the quiet empathy of a stranger passing you a tissue on a bus, without a word, recognizing your need in a moment of distress. A kind smile from a passerby, a genuine compliment that lights up your day, or the rare gift of someone being vulnerable with you - aren’t these moments special and don’t they deserve to be cherished.

These seemingly piddling moments carry within them a profound power - the power to transform, uplift, enliven and remind us that beneath the surface, we are all connected by the same web of emotions, needs, and desires. Yet, in our quest for apparent progress, wrong notions of perfection & ego, unwitting sadism and aspiring alpha concepts, we often succumb to a sense of insensitivity that blinds us to the beauty of these simple acts of kindness.

Our digital lives have highly exacerbated insensitivity to a level which knows no bounds, enabling and at times encouraging a disconnect between our actions and their impact on others. The anonymity and distance provided by our screens allow for a sadistic pleasure to seep into our interactions - be it through making someone embarrassed, sharing an unkind meme, or not thinking twice before sending that potentially hurtful message or picture. The immediacy with which we can communicate often bypasses our capacity for empathy and reflection.

But what if we chose differently? What if we took a moment to appreciate the heartwarming moments life offers us? What if we recognized the courage it takes to be kind in a world that often rewards the opposite? We have the power to create a ripple effect of positivity by simply initiating, acknowledging and returning these small acts of kindness, love, softness and beauty. What else is beauty then if it is not this?

As we reflect on our interactions, both online and in real life, let us challenge ourselves to pause before acting. Sometimes, overthinking is good. Let’s give a second thought before letting a brusque word out, before sharing that photo, that screenshot or making that comment (deliberate or unintentional).

It’s in these moments of pause that we can choose kindness over insensitivity, empathy over apathy. Let us picture ourselves in that same situation, in the same boots of that person and ask yourself “How would you feel?” These nonchalant, offhand acts of insensitivity cut deeper than knives, ruin lives , call a halt to mirth. Do you know the backstory behind that bagatelle, you can have no idea about the struggles around those!

The consequences of this insensitivity epidemic are profound. It fosters a milieu where empathy is scarce and superficial and flippant interactions stand in lieu of genuine, deep connections.

Relationships suffer, as individuals feel increasingly isolated and misunderstood. Furthermore, the societal cost is immeasurable, contributing to heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and even depression among those continuously exposed to such negativity.

The way out? Can we practice active listening? Can we mind our words (written or spoken or any media)? Let’s educate and advocate about the need for sensitivity as humans. Let’s reflect on our behaviour, let’s inspire others to follow suit.

Because the battle against insensitivity is not one we can afford to ignore. Each word, every action, possesses weight – capable of uplifting or shattering the delicate glasses of hearts and of ripping souls. The truth is, a little act of kindness can indeed go a long way. Recall that last instance someone offered you a genuine smile on a difficult day, or when a stranger held the door open for you when your hands were full.

Encouraging sensitivity means holding space for those voices that are too often drowned out by the clamor of the majority and advocating for inclusivity and kindness in every sphere of life.

In a world rapidly evolving with technology, where human interactions are filtered through screens and genuine connections seem to be dwindling, we are in a grave situation of an indifferent society and unfortunately, we are already on the verge.

Let us remind ourselves and each other that it is necessary to wear our hearts on our sleeves. In a world often marred by coldness and apathy, showing genuine emotion and concern for others is not a weakness but a Revolutionary act. It’s an open defiance against the status quo, a declaration that we refuse to be numbed by the insensitivity breeding around us.

Why, then, are we so hesitant? Our fear of vulnerability, of being perceived as ‘too much’ or ‘overbearing,’ paralyzes us. We’re conditioned to believe that indifference is a shield, protecting us from the sting of spurning or dejection.

Our present era, with its endless streams of curated perfection on social media and the relentless pressure to outdo one another, breeds a sense of isolation and inadequacy. The fear of being deemed too much - too emotional, too needy, too anything - silences our true voices and compels us to hide behind facades of indifference. Yet, this insensitivity, this refusal to acknowledge our own and others’ vulnerabilities, only deepens the chasms between us.

Let’s strive to understand rather than to judge, to empathise rather than give someone the elbow. Let us stretch conversations beyond the superficial, reaching the lands of dreams, fears, and passions. I am not not talking about the utopia but reality.
