At the outset, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to GK Labs and the Moul Mouj Foundation for organizing such an enlightening and impactful awareness program for seniors. The focus of the program was on a very common yet often misunderstood disease—diabetes. It was a groundbreaking initiative, and for me, it was the first program of its kind where seniors not only listened but actively participated. Misconceptions were cleared, questions were answered, and we had the privilege of interacting with a distinguished panel of doctors and experts. They not only educated us but also trained us on how to manage our own health and assist our loved ones at home who may be dealing with diabetes.

For those who couldn’t attend, I want to share the key lessons I learned. These insights could be life-changing for managing diabetes effectively.

1. Diabetes is More Than Just Medicines and Insulin

One of the primary takeaways from the session was that managing diabetes is not solely about taking medicines or insulin. Equally important are exercise and diet. Regular walking or even simple exercises done at home play a crucial role in maintaining blood sugar levels. These small steps can lead to significant improvements in overall health.

2. Healthy Eating, Not Starving

Many people associate diabetes with strict food restrictions or even starvation. However, I learned that a diabetic diet is not about deprivation. It’s about eating clean, hygienic, and balanced meals. This includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, pulses, nuts, fish, chicken, and lean meat. The key is moderation and being mindful of portion sizes. It’s important to eat wisely rather than cutting out entire food groups.

3. Complications of Uncontrolled Diabetes

One of the most critical points discussed was the impact of uncontrolled diabetes on other organs. Diabetes doesn’t just affect blood sugar levels—it can harm the eyes, nerves, kidneys, liver, skin, and ears. Regular eye checkups and other investigations as advised by the doctor are essential to catch complications early.

For instance, early detection of kidney issues can prevent more severe outcomes like dialysis. Similarly, timely interventions for nerve or eye problems can save vision and improve quality of life.

4. Hearing Aids: Improving Quality of Life

A noteworthy topic covered in the session was the importance of hearing aids for seniors. Just as spectacles enhance vision, hearing aids improve hearing and significantly enhance one’s quality of life. Accepting and using such aids can lead to a more fulfilling and active lifestyle.

As someone who has attended health awareness events before, I initially thought they were primarily for doctors and medical professionals. However, after participating in this program, I strongly believe that such sessions are equally important for seniors. They not only educate but also empower us to take charge of our health. These programs encourages interaction between seniors and healthcare experts, making healthcare accessible and understandable.

Additionally, Greater Kashmir and the Moul Mouj Foundation deserve commendation for addressing not just health issues but also societal values through their initiatives.

I sincerely hope GK Labs and the Moul Mouj Foundation continue to organize such programs regularly. I also suggest organizing a large-scale educational and motivational program specifically designed for young individuals who are the virtual caregivers of the elderly in our society. They are not just educational; they are transformative. Raising awareness about health, moral values, and the importance of intergenerational respect is crucial in today’s society. Let’s hope that more organizations take inspiration from such efforts and make senior care a priority.
