Kupwara, Dec 18: Security forces Wednesday achieved a major breakthrough after recovery of a narco-terror consignment in Amrohi village of border town Karnah in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara Ghulam Jeelani while divulging details in a press conference said that following a specific information about a narco-terror consignment in the Amrohi area near the Line of Control (LoC), Police and Army in a joint search operation recovered four packets of heroin-like substance weighing approximately 3 kg and 798 grams.

SSP said that during the search operation arms and ammunition, including 4 pistols and 6 magazines, were recovered from the spot, which were concealed by unknown terrorists with criminal intent.

He said that a case under relevant sections has been registered in this regard and investigation was underway to identify the perpetrators.

Meanwhile Army’s Chinar Corps in a post on X said, “On 17 Dec 2024, based on specific intelligence input, a Joint Search Operation was launched by #IndianArmy & @JmuKmrPolice in the general area Amrohi, Tangdhar, Kupwara. During searches, four Pistols, six Pistol Magazines, approx four Kgs of narcotics and other war-like stores have been recovered.”

SSP Kupwara said that Kupwara Police have acted tough against drug peddlers in the current year with the result 103 persons involved in drug peddling were arrested while fourteen persons have been booked under PIT NDPS Act. He said that five properties of drug peddlers were attached after discovering that they were acquired through proceeds of drug trafficking.

“So far this year 21.82 kilograms of heroin, 2.37 kilograms of charas, 30 kilograms of poppy husk, 202 bottles of illicit liquor and Rs 93,705 in cash has been recovered in multiple actions by Kupwara Police,” said the District Police Chief.

SSP sought cooperation from people to eradicate the drug menace and make Kupwara a beautiful place to live in. “Kupwara Police remains steadfast in its commitment to eradicate the drug menace, combat terrorism, and ensure the safety and security of the region,” he added.
