Landslide disrupts traffic movement for 2 hours at Kunfer tunnel

Ramban, June 20: Vehicular traffic movement was disrupted for a couple of hours due to a landslide that hit and blocked the south portal of Kunfer , Chanderkote-Peerah tunnel on Srinagar -Jammu National Highway on Thursday morning.

Traffic officials said a landslide hit and blocked the road on south portal of Kunfer tunnel due to which vehicular traffic was halted for two hours due to road restoration work this morning.

They said traffic was diverted through an additional two –lane tunnel at Kunfer.

On the other hand drivers and commuters complained that they remained stuck in traffic congestion between Chanderkote and Perah on Thursday morning.

Traffic authorities said National Highway, 44, remained open however they said vehicular traffic movement remained slow due to the breakdown of a few heavy vehicles and due to single-lane road stretches at Dalwass, Mehar Cafeteria, Panthyal, Magarkote, Shalgari, Gangroo, Nachlana besides poor road surface conditions at many places between Nashri and Banihal.

Meanwhile, traffic Police headquarters issued a fresh advisory for Friday stating that subject to fair weather and good road conditions medium and heavy vehicles would be allowed to ply on either side of highway. Traffic authorities once again advised passenger vehicle operators, and commuters not to undertake journeys on National Highway during the night hours due to apprehensions of shooting stones between Ramban and Banihal sectors.
