Ramban, Sep 11: Dozens of homes and a government high school building in Tangar village of Ramban district suffered partial damage after major land sinking triggered by recent heavy rains, prompting authorities to declare the school unsafe and step up safety measures.

Following the incident, Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Mohammad Alyas Khan, rushed to the spot along with disaster management officials and inspected the affected locality. As per the authorities, the school building had developed cracks, following which the building was declared unsafe.

The Deputy Commissioner, accompanied by Additional SP Mujeeb-Ur-Rehman, ACR Shokat Hayat Mattoo, AD FCS&CA Niamatullah Sheikh, Tehsildars, and engineers of PWD and PMGSY, assessed the damage and reviewed safety measures.

He also inspected safer sites identified for setting up a lodgement centre for families whose residential properties had been damaged or destroyed.

Meanwhile, joint teams of civil and police officials were also deployed to monitor the situation.

DC Khan said protecting human lives was the administration’s top priority and urged residents to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories. He directed officials to provide immediate relief to affected families and to remain prepared for evacuation if necessary.

During his visit, the deputy commissioner interacted with local residents, listening to their concerns, and issued on-the-spot directions for redressal of genuine grievances.

The district administration said they were closely monitoring the situation and taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.

Meanwhile, MLA Ramban Arjun Singh Raju also visited the Tanger area to assess the damages caused by the land subsidence. During his visit, MLA also interacted with local residents.
