Lack of street lights irks Hazratbal residents
Srinagar, Feb 9: Residents of Hazratbal’s outskirt areas are facing immense problems in absence of streetlights.
While the issue persists throughout the year, locals said it turns particularly stark in winter, when the sun sets early and long hours of darkness take over daily life.
Residents said that from the main road stretches along Burzahama to adjoining localities of Batapora, there is a total absence of streetlights on key routes. Commuters say navigating these roads after sunset becomes an ordeal, especially for office-goers returning late and students attending evening tuition classes.
“Once it gets dark, the road is pitch black. Vehicles slow down, pedestrians grope their way forward, and accidents feel just a step away,” said Irfan Ahmad, a resident.
Residents said similar conditions prevail at Mulphaq and Chatrahama, including their adjoining habitations, where residents complain that entire stretches remain unlit.
They said there is also an issue of defunct street lights that should be addressed without any delay.
Locals said the darkness has compounded fears amid a growing stray dog population. “Women, elderly residents, and students say they feel unsafe stepping out after dusk. It’s not just inconvenience, it is fear,” said a female college student from Burzahama.
Residents say the problem has lingered for years. They appealed to the concerned authorities to address the issue in a timely manner.
