KVK Ganderbal organises spices quality improvement programme

Ganderbal, Feb 13: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ganderbal organised a Quality Improvement Training Programme on Spices at Shuhama yesterday in collaboration with the Spice Board of India, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India.

The programme was presided over by Dr Ishfaq Abidi, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK Ganderbal and Prof FA Nehvi, Consultant at Spice Board of India was the Guest of Honour.

In his welcome address, Dr Abidi presented a detailed overview of prominent spices of Kashmir, highlighting their culinary, medicinal value and income generation potential. He stressed on promotion of local niche crops like Saffron, Kalazeea, Kashmiri Lal Mirch, Garlic and Shallot.

Ashutosh Gautam, Scientist & Officer-In-Charge, Spice Board Srinagar gave an overview of the role and schemes of Spice Board in marketing, export and development of Indian spices. Dr Nehvi, a former Professor at SKUAST-K, gave a presentation on Saffron cultivation and its prospects as a cash crop in non-traditional areas.

Scientists of KVK Ganderbal, Dr Eajaz Ahmad Dar and Dr Shuja Nabi Qureshi also delivered lectures on production technology, value addition and economic potential of spices of the Ganderbal district.

In his concluding remarks, Dr Abidi informed about prospective approaches and innovative models to promote the spice sector as prescribed by the Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-K and Director Extension.

The interactive session saw enthusiastic participation from attendees who expressed gratitude to the organizers. The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Faiqa Syeed, Programme Assistant, KVK Ganderbal.
