Kishtwar limits Independence Day events after deadly cloudburst

Ramban, Aug 14: Authorities in Kishtwar district will scale back Independence Day celebrations this year, limiting them to flag hoisting and official addresses, after a deadly cloudburst left at least 50 dead along the Machail Mata Yatra route, officials said Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kishtwar, Pawan Kotwal, issuing a circular, said that due to an unfortunate incident, it had been decided by the district administration that during Independence Day celebrations, no cultural events, ‘At Home’ tea party would take place.

The ceremony would remain limited to national flag hoisting, singing of the national anthem, a march past by security personnel’s contingents, and a speech by a VIP only.

The same would be followed at the sub-division and tehsil levels across the Kishtwar district.
