Kishtwar Disaster: Day 6: 3 more bodies recovered in Chisoti
Jammu, Aug 19: Joint rescue teams engaged in search operations at multiple locations in cloudburst-hit Chisoti village in Kishtwar district on the sixth day of the tragedy retrieved three more bodies on Tuesday.
However, their identities were yet to be ascertained.
According to the officials engaged in the rescue operation, these recoveries, including dismembered bodies (limbs only), were made underneath the big boulders, which had been blasted for the past three days. One female body, in a decomposed state, was recovered downstream.
With the retrieval, the death toll has reached 67, though there persists some confusion as officials state that the limbs could be of a man’s body recovered on the very first day.
The number of missing continues to hover around 70 on the basis of the number of families, which are still looking for their relatives missing following the disaster.
Even on the sixth day, they have been waiting for the closure of their agony, even if it comes in listless form now.
A revenue official has stated that 87 families have approached them looking for their missing relatives in the Chisoti help centres, one of ten centres established in different parts of the district to facilitate the grieving people.
Though searches have been intensified yet the hopes have started fading as it is believed that the bodies swept away in the mighty Chenab will not be recovered.
Meanwhile, the bridge, built by the Engineer troops of the Indian Army, has bolstered relief and rescue operations.
“Engineering support in relief operations. Engineer troops of the White Knight Corps within hours, restoring vital connectivity and facilitating relief operations at Chisoti village. White Knight Corps first responders, first in the Jammu region,” the Corps posted on ‘X’.
Indian Army engineers on Sunday evening had completed this bridge, giving a major push to the restoration of connectivity snapped since August 14, 2025- the day a flash flood washed away two crucial links, including a foot bridge, besides damages of gigantic scale, mainly in terms of life.
Earlier during the day, the Principal Secretary Home, J&K, Chadraker Bharati, too reached the spot to assess the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
