‘Khushalsar’s revival needs sustained scientific measures’
Srinagar, Aug 18: The Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation (NLCO) has urged the authorities to launch sustained scientific measures to restore the glory of Khushalsar lake in Downtown.
In a statement, NLCO Chairman Manzoor Wangoo expressed gratitude to the administration for initiating restoration works in the Gilsar–Khushalsar belt. “However, it is deeply concerning that the dredging being carried out without the use of barges is proving ineffective and counterproductive. The muck lifted from the lake continues to be dumped on the edges, where it remains uncollected, turning into a public nuisance, a health hazard, and an opportunity for land mafia encroachment,” Wangoo rued.
“After the Lieutenant Governor inaugurated and handed over the lakes to the LCMA through a Cabinet order, the lake’s conservation witnessed a positive shift. But only one machine alone is not enough. Unless barges are deployed, the muck cannot be transported out of the water system effectively. Dumping it along the edges only worsens the problem,” he said.
Wangnoo emphasised that the Khushalsar–Gilsar are the ‘kidneys’ of Srinagar, and their revival is critical. “Opening the navigation channels must be made a priority, as restored water flow would not only improve the lakes’ aesthetics but also play a crucial role in mitigating floods.”
*Wangnoo further lamented that Anchar Lake is in the worst condition. “Anchar has been left orphaned, requiring urgent attention. It must be handed over to the competent authority for comprehensive conservation, in line with the efforts being made in other connected lakes.”
“NLCO strongly appeals to the government to immediately deploy at least three dredgers along with barges in the twin lakes to ensure meaningful and sustainable restoration. Only with a comprehensive approach can these vital water bodies be saved from further degradation,” Wangnoo added.
