Kupwara, Dec 14: Residents of Khahipora and adjoining villages in the Rajwar area of Handwara sub-division have demanded early development of the playground at Galganzar, expressing disappointment over the prolonged delay in completing the project.

Locals said they had donated more than 100 kanals of land several years ago after authorities assured them that the playground would be developed into a major sports facility in the district. However, they said that despite the passage of several years, the authorities have failed to complete even the basic filling and levelling work.

“Some filling work was carried out under MGNREGA about two years ago, but no work has been undertaken since then,” a local cricketer said, adding that the delay reflects the indifferent attitude of the concerned departments.

Residents said they willingly gave up agricultural land without seeking any compensation so that local youth could have a proper space to play and nurture sporting talent. They have sought the intervention of MLA Handwara Sajad Gani Lone to ensure that the playground is fully developed at the earliest.
