KCCI welcomes extension of power amnesty for households, seeks similar relief for businesses
Srinagar, Aug 4: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has welcomed the government’s decision to extend the power amnesty scheme for domestic consumers in Jammu and Kashmir till March 31, 2026. However, the Chamber has urged the administration to extend the same relief to commercial power consumers, who continue to face mounting financial pressure.
In a statement, KCCI noted that while the move brings much-needed relief to households, thousands of commercial units—ranging from retail shops and service providers to hotels, factories, and offices—are struggling under the burden of accumulated power dues. This lingering liability, the Chamber said, threatens business continuity, employment, and economic stability in the region.
“Though the government had announced a power amnesty for commercial consumers, it was never implemented on the ground,” the statement said.
KCCI emphasised that a similar amnesty scheme for the commercial sector would provide immediate financial respite, prevent further closures, and aid in the recovery of Jammu and Kashmir’s fragile business ecosystem. It would also promote timely future compliance and enhance power sector revenues.
Given the prolonged setbacks caused by multiple lockdowns, pandemic-related disruptions, and a slow economic rebound, KCCI said commercial consumers deserve the same compassionate approach extended to domestic users.
The Chamber urged the government to take swift, pragmatic action and formally roll out the long-pending amnesty for commercial power consumers. “Such a step would send a clear message of support to the business community and reinforce the administration’s commitment to economic revival,” the statement added.
