Srinagar, Aug 30: In a landmark event, the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) joined forces with key industry bodies to unlock the Valley’s untapped potential in jewellery exports. The outreach programme, held in Srinagar, aimed to educate local merchants on entering the lucrative international market.

The event, organised by KCCI in association with the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GEPC) North Region, Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), and ECGC, saw the participation of industry leaders and local gold and diamond jewellery merchants. Vikramjit Singh, Commissioner Industries and Commerce, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

KCCI President Javed Ahmad Tenga hailed the event as a turning point for Kashmir’s jewellery sector. In his welcome address, Tenga emphasised the need for holding international and national exhibitions in Srinagar to provide opportunities to local entrepreneurs. He also suggested establishing a state-of-the-art testing lab for gems and jewellery, along with a skill development centre in Srinagar.

The programme featured insights from various industry experts. Ashok Seth, Regional Chairman of GJEPC North, shared the journey of GJEPC and stressed the importance of membership for merchants looking to enter the export business. He highlighted the significant potential of skilled artisans in Jammu and Kashmir.

A K Bhushan, Deputy Director of DGFT, provided a comprehensive explanation of the process to start a jewellery export business through a PowerPoint presentation. Sanjeev Bhatia, Regional Director North, presented the functions and activities of the Council, emphasizing how traders can receive support for participating in international exhibitions.

ECGC Manager Rahul elucidated on important policies designed to assist exporters, while Bashir Ahmad Rather, President of the All Kashmir Gold Dealers & Workers Association, stressed the importance of providing opportunities to local merchants in events and skill development programs.

In his address, Commissioner Vikramjit Singh commended the efforts of GJEPC and KCCI in organizing this first-of-its-kind outreach program in Kashmir. He acknowledged the hidden potential of the gem and jewellery industry in the region, which had remained largely unnoticed despite an abundance of skilled manpower. Singh pledged full government support to local associations and artisans, aiming to enhance the export potential of Kashmir’s gem and jewellery sector.

With a focus on skill development, export promotion, and government backing, Kashmir’s gem and jewellery sector is positioning itself for a significant role in the global market. This successful outreach program marks the beginning of a new chapter for local artisans and merchants in this traditional yet evolving industry.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Faiz Bakshi, Secretary General of KCCI, while Dr Tauseef Bhat skillfully anchored the programme.
