KCCI delegation meets DGP, discusses key business, tourism concerns in Kashmir

Srinagar, July 24: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) delegation, led by President Javid Ahmad Tenga, held a productive two-hour meeting with Director General of Police RR Swain at Police Headquarters, Srinagar on Tuesday, Additional DGP MK Sinha and IGP (Traffic) BS Tuti were also present.

The KCCI team presented a wide range of issues affecting the business and tourism sectors in Kashmir. A major concern was the lengthy process of renewing Tourism Registration Licenses for hotels, houseboats, travel agencies, and restaurants. The delegation suggested streamlining the renewal process to align with the government's "Ease of Doing Business" initiative.

The development of new tourist destinations on a sustainable basis was proposed to alleviate pressure on existing popular sites. The KCCI emphasized the need for planned development considering environmental factors and carrying capacity.

Hotel lease extensions, particularly in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, were discussed as a pressing issue affecting the hospitality sector. The KCCI urged for lease extensions to facilitate necessary upgrades and renovations in these establishments.

Other topics included simplifying the issuance of No Objection Certificates from various departments, addressing traffic disruptions caused by VIP movements, combating illegal occupation of footpaths, and tackling land encroachment by the "Qabza Mafia."

The delegation also highlighted concerns in the education sector, environmental conservation, and the need for better traffic management in key areas of Srinagar. They requested easier movement for tourists and trekkers in certain areas and simplified registration processes for foreign visitors. DGP Swain responded positively to the concerns raised. He assured immediate action on traffic management issues, strict measures against land encroachers, and steps to implement "Ease of Doing Business" principles. The DGP committed to personally visiting problem areas with KCCI representatives and announced the formation of a joint committee for regular issue resolution.

The meeting concluded with the DGP promising to address matters outside his jurisdiction with relevant government departments. Both parties expressed commitment to ongoing collaboration for problem-solving and regional development.

The KCCI delegation expressed gratitude to the DGP and his team for their time and understanding, describing the meeting as a significant step towards addressing the region's business and tourism challenges.
