Srinagar, Sep 26: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Srinagar has launched its annual Craft Research Documentation, an intensive field-based project running from September 17 to 27.

A statement said that the fifth-semester students from all departments will engage with artisan communities across Jammu and Kashmir to document and promote the region’s rich craft heritage.

The initiative aims to bridge the gap between classroom design education and the living traditions of master artisans. By working closely with craftspeople, students gain hands-on insights into traditional techniques, which will inform their future work in fashion and textile design, emphasising sustainable and culturally rooted practices.

The research will cover a wide range of celebrated crafts, including Pashmina weaving, Kani shawls, Walnut wood carving, Papier-mâché, Copperware, Sozni and Tilla embroidery, Willow wicker, and Tweed. Students will observe and document these crafts at the grassroots level, ensuring an authentic understanding of each art form.

The final output will include multi-format documentation: a comprehensive printed report, a professional video documentary, and short-form digital content such as reels, aimed at sharing these stories with a wider, global audience.

This initiative underscores NIFT Srinagar’s commitment to nurturing designers who are innovative yet deeply connected to India’s artisanal heritage, ensuring that traditional crafts continue to thrive in contemporary design landscapes.
