Dawat Book, founded by tech entrepreneur Iqra Nazir, is emerging as a beacon of innovation, sustainability, and empowerment in the region's burgeoning startup ecosystem.
Dawat Book, a cultural tech startup, aims to blend centuries-old traditions with cutting-edge technology seamlessly. The platform offers a comprehensive suite of tools designed to simplify the often complex process of planning and managing celebrations in Kashmir.
"After working with several organisations and startups, I knew I wanted to create something of my own," said Iqra Nazir, founder of Dawat Book. The idea for Dawat Book began to take shape during a casual gathering at a family event. My mentor and I were discussing the concept of digitalising 'Wartaav' very casually, and that basic thought sparked the journey."
Wartaav, an age-old practice in Kashmir similar to the concept of "Shagun" in other parts of India, involves the exchange of gifts during celebrations. Traditionally recorded in diaries, this practice has now found a digital home in the Dawat Book.
"Wartaav is as old as the mountains of Kashmir and should be preserved and modernised," Iqra Nazir explained.

"Our digital solution allows users to track and manage gift exchanges seamlessly, ensuring that this rich cultural practice continues in a more accessible and organised manner."
At its core, Dawat Book offers smart event management tools that simplify the planning process for various celebrations. Users can effortlessly manage guest lists, send digital invitations, and track gifts all within the platform.

The startup has also incorporated AI-based recommendations to enhance the user experience by providing personalised suggestions for products and services tailored to specific occasions.
"Our goal is to make Dawat Book the go-to platform for all celebration needs in Jammu and Kashmir, and beyond," Iqra stated. "By integrating technology with tradition, we ensure that every event is not only grand and memorable but also sustainable and culturally enriched."
One of the standout features of Dawat Book is its dedicated marketplace for handcrafted gifts. This platform not only brings unique, culturally rich products to consumers but also supports local women artisans by providing them with a digital space to showcase and sell their creations.
"We're not just a tech platform; we're a vehicle for empowerment," Iqra emphasised. "By connecting these talented artisans directly with consumers, we're helping to preserve traditional crafts while also providing these women with financial independence and recognition for their skills."
In addition to supporting local artisans, Dawat Book is making strides in promoting environmental consciousness. The platform offers a range of eco-friendly celebration essentials, from biodegradable plates and cutlery to sustainable decor items.
"As we celebrate our traditions, it's crucial that we also consider our impact on the environment. Our eco-friendly product offerings cater to the growing demand for green products while helping to reduce the environmental footprint of celebrations."
Operating a tech startup in Kashmir comes with its own set of challenges. The region's geography and socio-political climate can pose significant obstacles for entrepreneurs. However, Iqra's determination and vision have allowed Dawat Book to thrive despite these hurdles.
"Running a startup in Kashmir isn't easy, but it's incredibly rewarding," she shared. "We're not just building a business; we're creating opportunities and fostering innovation in a region that has immense untapped potential."
Despite the challenges, Dawat Book has managed to generate employment opportunities. The platform connects local service providers such as caterers, makeup artists, and event planners with consumers, supporting the local economy and creating jobs.
"Soon, we'll be expanding our network of local service providers," Iqra revealed. "This will not only make Dawat Book a more comprehensive platform but also create more job opportunities in our community."
Dawat Book's offerings go beyond just event planning and gift tracking. The platform has evolved into a comprehensive hub for all celebration needs. Its e-commerce stores sell a wide range of celebration essentials and gifting items, bridging the gap between traditional practices and modern convenience.
The startup's content platform also serves as a space for sharing artisan stories and celebration ideas, further enriching the user experience and fostering a sense of community among its users.
"We're building more than just an app," She explained. "Dawat Book is a community, a marketplace, and a preservation tool for our rich cultural heritage."
As Dawat Book continues to grow and evolve, Iqra has big plans for the platform's future. Upcoming features include aggregations for event planners, caterers, chefs, makeup artists, and videographers, further expanding the platform's utility and reach.
"Our vision is to make Dawat Book the ultimate celebration companion. Whether you're planning a wedding, a birthday party, or any other special occasion, we want Dawat Book to be your first stop."
The startup's innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. Dawat Book has been gaining traction on social media, with its YouTube channel showcasing the platform's features and success stories.
Dawat Book's story serves as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs in Kashmir and beyond. By addressing a specific cultural need through technology, Nazir has created a platform that not only solves practical problems but also preserves and celebrates local traditions.
"We're proving that it's possible to innovate while staying true to our roots," Iqra concluded. "Dawat Book is more than just a business; it's a testament to the power of technology to enhance and preserve our cultural practices."
