Kashmiri service providers ready to welcome Amarnath Yatris
Ganderbal, Jun 14: As the administration and security agencies remain on their toes to ensure smooth and peaceful conduct of the Amarnath Yatra, local Muslim service providers are gearing up with equal enthusiasm to welcome the yatris.
The annual Amarnath Yatra to the Amarnath cave shrine is set to begin on July 3 and culminate on August 9.
The yatra will be conducted via two routes: the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam track in Anantnag district and the shorter but steeper 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district.
Every year, lakhs of devotees from across the country undertake this yatra to offer prayers at the naturally formed ice stalagmite, believed to be a manifestation of lord Shiva, inside the cave shrine located in the Himalayas.
The yatra is not only a spiritual journey but also a symbol of communal harmony, where people of one faith are hosted and assisted by those from another.
Local Muslim service providers, including ponywallahs, palanquin bearers, porters, and tent operators, have already begun preparations ahead of the yatra.
For many of them, the yatra represents more than just a source of livelihood.
It is a testament to Kashmirís age-old traditions of hospitality and brotherhood.
ìWe have been going to Baltal for years to provide services to Amarnath pilgrims. Regardless of religion, we consider it our responsibility to ensure that the guests face no inconvenience and complete their yatra safely,î said Muhammad Akbar, a local service provider.
Another service provider echoed similar sentiments, saying, ìIt is not only about earning a livelihood. Serving the yatris and helping people from another faith gives us immense satisfaction.î
Despite the risks involved ñ harsh weather, long treks, and unpredictable terrain, local service providers continue to offer their services with dedication and resolve.
Their efforts have long been a cornerstone of the yatraís success, showcasing the spirit of Kashmiriyat and the syncretic ethos of the region.
Officials said that this yearís arrangements are being guided by the best practices adopted during the 2024 yatra.
The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), which manages the affairs of the holy shrine, is closely coordinating with the administration to ensure all necessary facilities are in place.
The administration has already begun making elaborate arrangements for the yatra.
Measures are being taken to improve infrastructure, streamline yatri movement, and enhance safety protocols along both routes.
