Kashmir Willow bats get ISI mark, major boost for global market prospects
Srinagar, Dec 19: In a landmark development, Kashmir Willow cricket bats have been brought under the Bureau of Indian Standards' ISI Mark (IS828), marking a significant step toward international recognition and quality assurance.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) convened with KBA Handicrafts Industrial Cooperative Limited on December 18 to discuss standardisation protocols for professional-grade Kashmir Willow cricket bats. The cooperative represents Kashmir's cricket bat manufacturers and operates under the Indian Societies Registration Act, with guidance from the Director of Handicrafts & Handloom, J&K.
This standardisation initiative builds on recent government support for the industry. In November, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced financial assistance for the Kashmir Willow cluster. The Union Ministry of Textiles has also granted handicraft status to professional Kashmir Willow cricket bats, acknowledging their cultural and economic significance.
"The standardisation of professional Kashmir Willow cricket bats is historic," said Fawzul Kabiir, Chairman of Kashmir Bat Association Industrial Cooperative Limited and Founder of GR8 Sports India Pvt. Ltd. "This will elevate our indigenous product's status globally while supporting local artisans and manufacturers who preserve this legacy."
The BIS meeting focused on establishing ISI certification requirements for professional-grade bats. This development follows the success of GR8 Sports India Pvt Ltd, whose cricket bats received ICC approval in 2021, demonstrating Kashmir Willow's potential in international markets.
The standardization program, combined with government initiatives including financial support, infrastructure development, and streamlined export procedures, aims to revitalize the industry. These measures are expected to enhance Kashmir Willow's competitiveness in global markets while strengthening India's position in professional sports equipment manufacturing.
