Srinagar, May 11: The Kashmir University Saturday announced the selection of Dr Anzar A Khuroo as INSA (Indian National Science Academy) Associate Fellow (IAF) for the year 2024.

To recognise the potential of young scientists in the country, the INSA Associate Fellows are selected in recognition of their notable research contributions to any branch of science and technology and preferably selected on the basis of the exceptional research work done by them in India.

"The IAF carries a certificate, fellowship of Rs 10,000 per month for one year and international air travel support for attending scientific conferences abroad," an official spokesperson said in a statement issued here.

The IAF will be also invited to present the research work during the ensuing Anniversary General Meeting of INSA, read the statement.

Dr Khuroo is currently working as Associate Professor at Centre for Biodiversity & Taxonomy (CBT), Department of Botany, University of Kashmir. He has been selected based on his significant research contributions to ecology of invasive alien species, their spread and impacts and role of climate change in causing changes in biodiversity patterns in Kashmir mountains of the Western Himalaya.

"INSA has recognised Dr Khuroo with an exceptional potential to be a leader in this area of research and has also recently been renominated for the second term (2024-26) as Expert Member to the Jammu and Kashmir Biodiversity Council," the spokesperson said.

His lab, acronym BIOTA, at University of Kashmir has made extensive and pioneering contributions to document, conserve and sustainably use the biodiversity of Kashmir Himalaya. He has more than 200 research papers in reputed journals and two books to his credit.

In her congratulatory message, KU Vice Chancellor, Prof Nilofer Khan extended her best wishes to Dr Khuroo and expressed her confidence that Dr Khuroo's appointment as INSA Associate Fellow "will not only inspire his peers but also contribute significantly to the scientific community's understanding of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use".

"Dr Khuroo's dedication and pioneering work at the varsity's Centre for Biodiversity & Taxonomy (CBT), reflects his commitment to advancing scientific knowledge for the benefit of humanity and national welfare, Prof Khan added.

KU Registrar, Prof Naseer Iqbal, also extended his warmest congratulations to Dr Anzar A Khuroo for his remarkable achievement in being selected a INSA Associate Fellow for the year 2024.

"This is a moment of great pride for the university community as he continues to excel in his research endeavours and represents the University of Kashmir on the national and international stage, Prof Naseer said.

INSA – Indian National Science Academy – is one of the oldest science academies in India established in 1935 with the aim of promoting science and harnessing scientific knowledge for the cause of humanity and national welfare.
