Kashmir loses jewel in the crown

Mohammad Shafi Pandit was a trailblazing figure in Jammu and Kashmir’s history, renowned for his remarkable achievements as a top-ranking IAS officer and passionate advocate for social change. As the first Muslim IAS officer from J&K, he paved the way for future generations.

Born into a family with a strong bureaucratic legacy, Pandit’s father, a senior bureaucrat under the Maharaja, inspired him to pursue a career in civil service. Initially, Pandit wanted to become a doctor, but his father’s encouragement led him to take the IAS exams, where he secured the third position in his batch.

Throughout his illustrious career, Pandit held various esteemed positions, including Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission. He was also the President of the Youth Hostels Association of India (YHAI), where he worked tirelessly to promote environmental conservation and clean up the iconic Dal Lake in Srinagar .

Pandit’s commitment to social causes and community engagement extended beyond his professional responsibilities. He believed in the importance of civil society engagement between Kashmir and the rest of India, fostering greater understanding and cooperation.

As a testament to his dedication to public service, Pandit received numerous accolades. His legacy serves as an inspiration to aspiring civil servants and social leaders, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir.
