JU’s 19th second special convocation: Girls outshine boys yet again!
Jammu, Nov 13: The girl students yet again outshone boys in the 19th second special convocation of University of Jammu on Thursday.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the Chancellor of University, who presided over the convocation as the chief guest, in his keynote address stated the sterling performance of the girl students yet again reaffirmed that women-led development would be the strength of “Viksit Bharat.”
“Our daughters will lead the country and mentor the future generation. I’m happy to see 133 girls figuring in the list of gold medals and similarly 264 girls receiving PhD degrees thus constituting almost 75 percent of the total awards,” he shared his happiness.
In this connection, LG Sinha also referred to India’s victory march in 2025 Women’s World Cup. He also congratulated the University of Jammu for its exemplary contribution to the country’s educational landscape and extended his felicitations to the women students for their excellent academic performance across the subjects.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is the Pro-Chancellor, as the guest of honour, too, lauded the performance of girl students and greeted them in his address.
Jammu University Vice Chancellor Prof Umesh Rai, while presenting a report, at the very outset of the convocation, stated that over 400 girls out of over 600 candidates received medals and awarded PhD degrees.
“The event is special as female scholars have outperformed their male counterparts by a ratio of nearly three to one in securing PhD degrees and gold medals in this special convocation,” Prof Rai said.
He stated that 425 PhD degrees were awarded between 2020 and 2024 and 178 gold medals were awarded during the same period. “This is heartening to note that 75 percent of these awardees are girls,” he said.
Vice chancellors of various universities, Heads of Departments, faculty and students were present. Gulam Ali Khatana and Sat Sharma, Members of Parliament, Rajya Sabha; Dr Darakhshan Andrabi, Chairperson, J&K Waqf Board; senior officials and prominent citizens also attended the special convocation ceremony.
