Judiciaries must learn from each other in globalised world: CJI Gavai
New Delhi, Sep 6: Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai on Friday underlined the need for stronger cooperation between courts across nations, saying that in today’s globalised world, judiciaries are increasingly interconnected and must learn from one another’s experiences, Bar and Bench reported.
Speaking at the Nepal-India Judicial Dialogue 2025 in Kathmandu, CJI Gavai said the exchange of judicial knowledge and ideas has become indispensable for the growth and effectiveness of modern systems of justice.
He noted that courts are no longer limited to adjudicating disputes but also act as guardians of constitutional ideals and catalysts for democratic reforms.
Tracing India’s judicial journey, he cited landmark rulings from the basic structure doctrine in Kesavananda Bharati to recent verdicts on electoral transparency, including the judgment striking down the Electoral Bond scheme. He stressed that the Supreme Court has expanded rights to education, privacy, reproductive choice and dignity, reflecting the Constitution as a living document. CJI Gavai also praised the Supreme Court of Nepal for its progressive role in advancing gender justice, privacy, environmental protection and indigenous rights. He thanked Nepal Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut for fostering dialogue and said such exchanges strengthen constitutional values in both countries.
