J&K’s maiden vesicoscopic ureteric reimplantation performed at SMGS Hospital Jammu
Jammu, Sep 10: In a landmark achievement for paediatric healthcare in Jammu and Kashmir, the Department of Paediatric Surgery at SMGS Hospital, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, successfully performed the Union Territory’s first-ever vesicoscopic ureteric reimplantation on an 8-year-old boy from Jammu on September 9.
The young patient was suffering from vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), a serious condition in which urine flows backward from the bladder into the kidneys, leading to kidney damage.
The condition was corrected using a minimally invasive vesicoscopic approach (inside the urinary bladder) – a rare and highly advanced surgical technique not previously performed in the Union Territory.
The complex and delicate procedure, which lasted approximately two and a half hours, was led by Dr Saalim Nazki, Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery at GMC Jammu.
He was ably assisted by Dr Akshat Sudhanshu, Dr Priyanka Koushal (Registrar) and Dr Olive Sharma (PG).
The anaesthesia team included Dr Isha Gupta and Dr Kunal Sharma, who ensured the child’s safety and stability throughout the procedure. Critical operating support was provided by Rakesh Kumar, Eric Teji and Zaheer Abbas.
The child was monitored postoperatively in the paediatric ICU for 24 hours under the able guidance of Dr Surjit Thapa and his team.
Remarkably, the child was started on oral feeds the same day and made an excellent recovery. He was discharged on the fourth postoperative day and is currently doing well.
Commenting on the milestone, Dr Saalim Nazki expressed his pride in the team’s dedication and skill. He also extended gratitude to the hospital administration, including Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Principal of GMC Jammu, and Dr Dara Singh, Medical Superintendent of SMGS Hospital, for their constant support and encouragement.
“This is not just a surgical success but a major step forward in paediatric minimally invasive surgery in J&K,” Dr Nazki said.
“The successful procedure marks a significant advancement in paediatric surgical capabilities in the region and sets a new benchmark for future scarless interventions,” he stated.
