Srinagar, Dec 12: The Jammu & Kashmir Pollution Control Committee (JKPCC), Kashmir seized a massive consignment of banned polythene at Railway Station Budgam, officials said.

As per the statement, the action followed specific information received on 11-12-2025 that a large consignment of non-biodegradable material (polythene) was being transported to Budgam through train number 00461.

Acting on the input, the Regional Director JKPCC Kashmir constituted a team to inspect, examine and seize the material under the J&K Non-Biodegradable Material (Management, Handling and Disposal) Act, 2007 in case of violation.

The team was headed by Fiaz Ahmad, District Officer JKPCC Srinagar, and Ashraf Khanday, District Officer JKPCC Budgam, with full cooperation from the District Administration Budgam and support from J&K Police during the operation.

The consignment, initially expected to arrive at 1 pm, reached Budgam Railway Station around 7 pm due to delays. During the search operation, officials recovered 698 bags containing banned polythene bags of less than 120 microns, weighing approximately 17,450 kg (17.45 tonnes). The consignment was seized on the spot under Section 10 of the J&K Non-Biodegradable Material (Management, Handling and Disposal) Rules, 2009. The seized material has been placed in the custody of GRPF for further action. Authorities said an investigation is underway to identify the source of the consignment and its actual intended destination.
