JKCA U-23 Trials: Day 2 sees north Kashmir talent in action

Srinagar, May 20: In the bright, sunny outfield of Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium in Srinagar, as cricket hopefuls lined up for their chance to impress selectors on Day 2 of the JKCA Under-23 open trials, two young men from North Kashmir stood out—not just for their skill, but for the quiet resilience etched on their faces.

Shariq Ahmad from Handwara arrived at the ground well before the 8:45 AM reporting time. For him, the journey was more than just physical, it was a symbol of persistence. “I have grown up playing tennis ball cricket in alleys and orchards,” he said while taping up his fingers. “This is not my first official trial, but getting here means a lot to me.”

Azhar from Rafiabad brought with him a different story. A seam pacer with a smooth run-up and natural out-swing, Azhar has been training at a cricket academy for some time. “My father always encouraged me to balance studies with cricket,” Azhar shared. “Today is about making him proud.”

“I’m thankful to JKCA for providing this platform. It’s a good opportunity for players from far-off districts like ours,” said Shariq.

Azhar echoed the sentiment, saying, “The atmosphere here is professional and encouraging. I gave my best today and hope to get shortlisted.”

JKCA officials said the trials are being conducted under the supervision of three selectors and are open to all eligible players under 23 years of age who possess a valid digital date of birth certificate, PAN card, and PVC Aadhaar card.

The trials will conclude on May 21 with players from Central Zone — Srinagar, Budgam, and Ganderbal — appearing for selection. A reserve day has been set for May 22, if required.
