Srinagar, Jan 12: In a significant move aimed at enhancing the market presence of locally manufactured products, the Jammu and Kashmir government has unveiled a robust draft export policy emphasising the promotion of Geographic Indication (GI) tagged products.

The initiative seeks to elevate exports, improve quality assurance, and strengthen the identity of traditional craftsmanship from the region.

Central to this initiative is the establishment of a dedicated nodal department for GI, set to oversee all activities related to GI products. This department will ensure streamlined operations, facilitating collaboration with concerned line ministries to promote and protect the region's unique offerings.

As outlined in the draft export policy, the government plans to set up Facilitation Cells (FC) for each registered GI product. These cells will play a crucial role in addressing quality concerns, combating intellectual property infringement, and providing essential logistical support for both online and offline market access. This structure aims to not only safeguard the interests of local producers but also enhance their visibility in competitive markets.

To further bolster the reach of these products, the government as per draft export policy intends to implement ongoing consumer awareness programs. These initiatives will educate consumers about the distinctiveness and value of GI-tagged products sourced from Jammu and Kashmir, fostering a greater appreciation for regional heritage.

Recognising the importance of equipping local producers with the necessary skills, the government will also provide orientation, financial literacy, and training in collaboration with e-commerce platforms. This support is designed to empower GI producers, enabling them to scale their enterprises effectively and tap into broader market opportunities.

In a unique approach to promote local economies, the government is exploring the potential for GI-based tourism. This initiative aims to attract tourists by highlighting the rich heritage associated with GI-tagged products, thereby stimulating local economies and preserving traditional crafts.

The draft policy underscores the government’s commitment to identifying more products for GI registration with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). By expanding the list of registered GIs, the government hopes to enhance the promotional outreach through official e-brochures, further widening market access.

Currently, Jammu and Kashmir boasts ten internationally recognized GIs, including the Kani Shawl, Kashmir Pashmina, and Kashmir Saffron, among others. Most recently, Ramban Anardana, or dried pomegranate seeds, received GI status in 2024, marking a significant addition to the region’s prestigious lineup of tagged products.

Through this comprehensive strategy, the Jammu and Kashmir government aims to elevate its local treasures on a global platform, ensuring that the remarkable quality and cultural significance of its products gain the recognition they deserve.
