Srinagar, Jan 27: The Jammu and Kashmir government is set to introduce ‘J&K Export Awards,’ a new initiative aimed at fostering competitive spirit among exporters and recognising excellence in the Union Territory’s export sector.

The annual awards programme, outlined in the draft Export Policy, will honour achievements across multiple categories, including the Best Exporter of the Year in five focus sectors, Best Employer by an exporting unit, Best Women Exporter of the Year, and Best Start-up Exporter of the Year. The initiative places special emphasis on micro, small, and non-traditional sectors.

“This new awards programme is part of our comprehensive strategy to transform J&K into a competitive export-led economy. We’re targeting exports worth ₹10,000 crores in the next five years,” said a senior official from the J&K Commerce Department, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The timing of this initiative is particularly significant as J&K has shown remarkable improvement in its export preparedness. The region recently secured the second position among Union Territories in NITI Aayog’s Export Preparedness Index 2022, with its overall national ranking improving from 23rd to 17th position.

A senior official from the Commerce Department revealed that the new policy framework aims to address specific challenges faced by local exporters. “Our geographical location presents unique logistical challenges. Through this policy, we’re introducing both fiscal and non-fiscal interventions to offset these disadvantages and make our exporters more competitive in global markets.”

The policy identifies several focus areas for export promotion, leveraging J&K’s traditional strengths in handicrafts, handloom products, and agricultural commodities, while exploring emerging sectors like pharmaceuticals, medical devices, IT & ITES, biotechnology, and electric mobility.

The initiative aligns with national programs such as ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Local goes Global,’ while addressing regional specificities. The government has set an ambitious target of achieving exports worth ₹10,000 crores in the next five years through this comprehensive approach.

“Our vision goes beyond just numbers. We’re working to transform J&K into a ‘haven for exports’ while maintaining our identity as ‘heaven on earth.’ This isn’t just about economic growth; it’s about creating sustainable opportunities for our people,” official said.

The new policy also addresses the need for capacity building and quality enhancement, with training programmes, infrastructure development, and marketing assistance as integral components of the export promotion strategy. The government is expected to release detailed guidelines for the awards program in the coming weeks, with the first ceremony likely to be held later this year.
