J&K proposes to host 1st Asian Traditional Sports and Games in 2027
Srinagar, Sep 24: In a major step toward promoting traditional sports, the Jammu and Kashmir Council of Traditional Sports and Games has officially submitted a proposal to host the inaugural Asian Traditional Sports and Games in 2027.
A statement said that the event is envisioned to build on the successes of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG), which has been instrumental in organizing global traditional sports events.
The proposal, presented by Tarsem Sharma, President of the Jammu and Kashmir Council of Traditional Sports and Games and Vice President of the Association of Traditional Sports and Games, India, is addressed to Aman Kumar Sharma, Secretary-General of the Association of Traditional Sports and Games and Executive Member of the ICTSG. It outlines Jammu and Kashmir as the ideal venue for the 1st Asian Traditional Sports and Games, positioning the region as a hub for traditional sports in Asia.
This proposal follows the landmark 1st African Traditional Sports and Games held in Namibia in 2026, which celebrated Africa’s rich sporting heritage. The ICTSG aims to replicate that success with the Asian edition, which will showcase a range of traditional sports from across Asia, promoting cultural unity and international collaboration.
If approved, the 1st Asian Traditional Sports and Games will mark another significant achievement in the ICTSG’s mission to preserve traditional sports and align with UNESCO’s goals of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. The event will contribute to promoting peace and mutual respect through sports, fostering intercultural dialogue across Asia.
The proposal highlights Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural diversity, natural beauty, and strong infrastructure, making it an ideal location for this international event. The games will feature competitions in various traditional sports, along with workshops and cultural programs to preserve and promote the rich heritage of participating nations.
The Jammu and Kashmir Council of Traditional Sports and Games, in collaboration with ICTSG and the Government of India, aims to host a world-class event that will strengthen cultural ties and promote the region as a key destination for traditional sports in Asia.
