Srinagar, Feb 06: In an alleged case of medical malpractice, the Health and Medical Education Department today took action against two doctors following an alleged surgical error at Hakeem Sonaullah Hospital in Sopore. The Operation Theater of the hospital was also sealed.

On February 3, 2025, a patient scheduled for ear surgery reportedly underwent a hysterectomy due to what has been described as "confusion" in the reports.

Dr. Anjum Nazir, a Consultant Gynaecologist at SDH Sopore, and Dr. Tariq Ahmad Dar, a Medical Officer with a Diploma in Anesthesia at DH Bandipora, have been placed under immediate suspension.

Both doctors are now attached to the Directorate of Health Services in Jammu until further notice and are banned from engaging in any private medical practice across Jammu and Kashmir.

The operation theater at Hakeem Sonaullah Hospital, Sopore, where the incident occurred, has been sealed pending the outcome of the investigation. Furthermore,  the two doctors have been barred from carrying out any form of private practice in J&K.

According to Government Order No. 115-JK (HME) of 2025, this move comes to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the incident, aiming to preserve the integrity of the healthcare system. The government has emphasized the necessity of this action to restore public confidence in the medical profession.

An inquiry has been launched to delve into the specifics of this case, focusing on the operational procedures, communication breakdowns, and accountability within the hospital. The findings of this investigation will be crucial in determining further actions against those involved and in implementing preventive measures to safeguard patient health.
