New Delhi, Nov 13: Polling for the first phase of the Jharkhand Assembly elections concluded smoothly today, with a voter turnout reaching 64.86% by 5 PM, surpassing the 63.9% turnout recorded in the 2019 Assembly elections, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The voting took place in 43 Assembly Constituencies (ACs) across 15 districts, known for their significant tribal population and areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism. The Election Commission said a vibrant and peaceful polling atmosphere, characterised by enthusiastic participation from diverse voter groups, including first-time voters, elderly citizens, women, Persons with Disabilities (PwD), and tribal communities.

Webcasting was implemented at all locations to ensure transparency. In sensitive areas like Manoharpur and Jaganathpur constituencies of West Singhbhum district, security forces successfully thwarted attempts by extremist groups to disrupt the voting process through boycott posters and blockades.

Tribal voters, including those from the Lakhaidih village in Potka AC, participated actively. This was the first time voters from this village, with a 100% tribal population, could cast their ballots at a polling station set up within their locality instead of traveling long distances through challenging terrain, election commission office said.

Basic facilities like drinking water, first aid, wheelchairs, and volunteer support were provided at all polling stations, many of which were decorated with local themes reflecting Jharkhand's cultural heritage. The enforcement agencies have seized of over Rs. 183 crores in illicit cash, drugs, and freebies since the election was announced. Polling officials were airlifted to 225 booths in remote areas to facilitate voting in regions with dense forests and tough terrains.
