JD (S) suspends Prajwal Revanna over sex scandal controversy
New Delhi, Apr 30: After an uproar in Karnataka, and across the country in political circles, Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, faces suspension from Janata Dal (Secular) over a sex tape controversy.
Video clips purportedly depicting him engaging in sexual acts with multiple women, some of whom are government employees, circulated in Hassan district, prompting the state govt to launch a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe.
“We welcome SIT against Prajwal Revanna... suspend him from the party till the SIT investigation is completed,” stated JD(S) core committee president GT Deve Gowda. Former Karnataka CM and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy emphasized, “His suspension is till the investigation is completed.”
HD Kumaraswamy pointed fingers at Karnataka’s deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, alleging his involvement in the scandal and demanding his dismissal. These statements followed Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s indication of BJP’s support for a thorough investigation.
Amit Shah in a Press Conference in Assam this morning vehemently condemned such behaviour and assured swift action. Shah affirmed the BJP’s unwavering support for women’s issues and pledged zero tolerance for instances of sexual harassment under Modi’s leadership.
However, he criticized the Congress-led Karnataka government for its purported inaction, demanding accountability, and thorough investigations into the matter. He urged Priyanka Gandhi to hold her own party’s government accountable on pertinent issues and assured cooperation from the Home Ministry if sought.
BJP leader Devaraje Gowda revealed prior warnings about the allegations against Prajwal Revanna, underscoring a communication breakdown within the party. “I wrote a letter... but it did not reach him... So I gave a copy of the videos... to Gowda... I will appear before the SIT today,” expressed his driver Karthik.
Prajwal Revanna, the incumbent MP from Hassan, faces mounting accusations, including sexual harassment allegations against his father, HD Revanna, a former Karnataka PWD minister. The police have registered a case against Prajwal under various sections, including sexual harassment and stalking.
As the controversy unfolds, Prajwal has reportedly left the country, further complicating the situation. However, his father denies the claim and asserts their willingness to cooperate with the investigation.
