Jaundice outbreak reported in Kupwara village
Kupwara, Sep 14: Several cases of jaundice have been reported from Haril area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district while locals have blamed contaminated drinking water for the outbreak.
Residents complained that the water reservoir located in the area has not been cleaned for years, turning it into a potential source of disease. "The reservoir is full of dirt and filth, but the concerned department has never bothered to clean it, forcing us to drink this water, with the result we are falling sick," a local told Greater Kashmir.
"The health of the entire population is at risk, yet the concerned authorities haven't taken any tangible step to clean the reservoir," said another local.
Locals have demanded immediate cleaning of the reservoir, water testing, and proper medical facilities for those already affected.
They have also sought immediate intervention of District Administration in this regard so that the outbreak can be contained.
Meanwhile, Block Medical Officer (BMO) Langate Dr Nazir Ahmad told Greater Kashmir that so far only a single child has been reported positive for jaundice and he was presently being treated at Srinagar. He said that they are closely watching the situation and a team of doctors has already been deputed in the area.
