Jammu, Sep 20: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu Joginder Singh has suspended Chhanni Himmat Police Station SHO, Inspector Deepak Pathania; Sainik Colony Police Post in-charge, PSI Wasim Bhatti; and PSI Rohit Sharma, also posted at Chhanni Police Station, for alleged lapses in the murder case of a Mumbai woman in Sainik Colony in August this year.

The action came after the police found that the woman died of gunshot injuries and not in any “Road Traffic Accident (RTA)”. In the incident, two other women, including the sister of the deceased, also sustained injuries.

Prior to it, on August 18, the police also converted the inquest proceeding in the case into an FIR and registered a case of murder.

A police spokesperson said, “Mehjabeen Akil Sheikh, 30, daughter of Akil Sheikh, resident of West Malad, Mumbai, along with his sister Fatima Akhil, 21, and Jaspreet Kour, 28, resident of Ludhiana, Punjab, at present residing at House Number 157 Sec A Sainik Colony, on August 21, 2025, were shifted to JK Medicity Hospital due to an RTA case, as claimed by locals, who had brought them to ASCOMS Batra Hospital for treatment. From there they were shifted to GMC Jammu, where Mehjabeen succumbed to her injuries.”

“In this regard, inquest proceedings vide DD No 29 dated 30/08/2025 were initiated at Police Station Chhanni, and during the course of the investigation, it surfaced that on August 21, 2025, one unknown individual entered their rented accommodation at Sainik Colony. He opened fire on them and fled away from the spot, but the incident was shown as an RTA case by injured individuals,” the police spokesperson said.

The police, by taking cognisance, lodged an FIR No. 152/2025 u/s 103(1)/109/332(b) BNS against the unknown accused and started the investigation which was going on.

Police said earlier all three injured were admitted at GMC Jammu without the knowledge of Chhanni Police. Unfortunately, the victim expired on August 29, 2025, due to injuries.

“On August 29, the mother of the deceased approached the District Magistrate Jammu office for exemption of postmortem, and the application reached Police Station Chhanni Himmat duly marked by ADC Jammu. SHO Chhanni Himmat, upon questioning, found her replies suspicious and contradictory,” police said.
