New Delhi, Dec 24: The Israeli military has affirmed its commitment to the ongoing operation in Gaza, describing it as a "protracted" and "difficult" endeavor. Meanwhile, ground operations in both the southern and northern Gaza Strip are being expanded, according to a military spokesman.

US President Joe Biden, in a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, emphasized the "critical need" to protect civilians but stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire. Netanyahu, in response, asserted that the war would persist until all Israeli objectives were accomplished.

The UN Security Council on late Friday approved a resolution, calling for significant aid deliveries to Gaza but avoiding a direct demand for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Efforts to secure a fresh truce through talks in Egypt have yet to yield results.

Media reports suggest that Egypt proposed a new three-stage plan, starting with a two-week humanitarian truce that could be extended. This initial phase involves the release of 40 hostages by Hamas and 120 Palestinian prisoners by Israel. Subsequent stages include the establishment of an independent body for humanitarian relief and reconstruction, a comprehensive ceasefire, and a prisoner exchange.

As the 79-day-old conflict unfolds, the Gaza health ministry reports alarming figures, with over 20,000 people killed and 53,000 injured. On the Israeli side, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced 13 soldiers killed since Friday, bringing the total to 154. Israel claims to have arrested 700 Palestinian militants since the commencement of its military operation, aimed at eliminating Hamas.

The roots of the conflict trace back to October 7 when Hamas fighters crossed from Gaza into southern Israel, resulting in casualties and hostages. The IDF asserts almost full operational control of the north of the Gaza Strip while intensifying operations in the south. The military continues its bombing campaign, prompting evacuation orders for civilians.

Despite international pressure, both the Israeli and Palestinian leadership remain resolute in their positions. President Biden's call for civilian protection clangs with Netanyahu's determination to continue until all goals are achieved. The situation remains fluid, with the atrocities on civilians growing and the prospects for an immediate resolution appearing elusive.
