Despite advocating for the protection of civilians in Israel, the US vote provides an extension for Israel's military operations. UN chief António Guterres issues a stark warning, highlighting the dire conditions in Gaza for humanitarian aid delivery and emphasizing global scrutiny and historical implications.

Sponsored by the United Arab Emirates and co-sponsored by 97 nations, the resolution receives support from 13 members, with the UK abstaining. The US, as a permanent member, exercises its veto power, citing unaddressed recommendations. The UK argues that the resolution falls short of condemning Hamas atrocities on October 7.

International backlash with China and Russia condemning the US, and the State of Palestine deeming it a historic turning point. Abby Maxman, CEO of Oxfam America, criticizes President Biden's administration, asserting that the veto undermines US credibility. Maxman urges leveraging the special relationship with Israel to bring an end to the crisis. The unsuccessful resolution underscores grave concerns about Gaza's catastrophic situation, emphasizing the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire, unconditional hostage release, and humanitarian access. The conflict, initiated by Hamas nine weeks ago, has resulted in 1,200 deaths and 240 hostages. The Gaza health ministry reports over 17,400 casualties in Israel's retaliatory campaign.
