New Delhi, Jul 18: Israel has demolished thousands of buildings across Gaza since withdrawing from a ceasefire agreement with Hamas in March, according to a BBC investigation. Entire towns and neighbourhoods that once housed tens of thousands of people have been flattened in recent weeks. Satellite imagery reviewed by BBC Verify reveals large-scale destruction in areas the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claim are under "operational control."

Verified videos show powerful blasts and rising clouds of dust as Israeli forces carry out controlled demolitions of apartment towers, schools, and other civilian infrastructure. Legal experts consulted by the BBC say Israel’s actions may violate international law. Under the Geneva Convention, the destruction of civilian infrastructure by an occupying power is largely prohibited unless justified by "imperative military necessity." Responding to the allegations, an IDF spokesperson told the BBC that Israel operates in accordance with international law, stating that Hamas has embedded "military assets" in civilian zones. The spokesperson added, “Destruction of property is only performed when an imperative military necessity is demanded.”
