International Women’s Day commemorated at Islamic College
Srinagar, Mar 9: Islamia College of Science & Commerce celebrated International Women's Day today with fervour and enthusiasm.
The event was organised by the College Women's Cell in collaboration with NSS Unit-III. It aimed to celebrate the achievements of women, raise awareness about gender equality, and inspire students to contribute to a more equitable and inclusive society.
The theme of this year's celebration was "Accelerate Action," emphasizing the urgency of advancing gender equality. The celebration went beyond a routine festivity, encouraging participants to reflect on the deeper essence of womanhood.
The event began with a welcome speech by the Principal of the institution, Prof. (Dr.) Tahmeena Yousuf. She emphasised the need to dismantle the structures of thought that perpetuate inequality. "Women have an innate ability to empathize, connect emotionally, and offer compassionate support to others," she stressed. Their emotional intelligence enables them to create safe and non-judgmental spaces where all feel heard and validated.
The keynote address was delivered by Syed Sleet Shah, DySP PHQ Srinagar, who spoke on drug abuse, cybercrime, and the role of women officers in providing counseling and rehabilitation services. She highlighted how women officers offer a unique blend of empathy and patience—often critical in transforming lives. She also emphasised that the contribution of women in this field is increasingly recognised as essential in addressing the complex psychological, social, and emotional needs of young individuals who have strayed into criminal behavior or substance abuse.
Advocate Afroza Hassan spoke about the rights guaranteed to women by the Constitution of India, discussing Article 14, Article 15, and Article 16 at length.
Muskan, a self-defense coach, was also present at the event. She conducted a session with students and staff, promoting the importance of self-defense for women. The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Prof. Irfana Shafi, Convener of the College Women's Cell.
