International Human Rights Day: J&K Police calls for unity in upholding universal rights
Srinagar, Dec 10: The Jammu and Kashmir Police marked International Human Rights Day with a public message underscoring the universal nature of human rights and the collective responsibility to uphold them.
In a tweet posted from its official account, the police highlighted the values of dignity, freedom and justice for all, calling on citizens to stand united in protecting fundamental rights.
International Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10 to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. The day serves as a global reminder that all individuals, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender or socio-economic status, are entitled to basic rights and freedoms.
Reiterating this message, the J&K Police said: “International Human Rights Day. Human rights are universal. Let us stand together for dignity, freedom and justice for all.” The statement comes at a time when conversations around human rights remain a focal point, with civil society groups, government agencies and international bodies stressing the importance of protecting individual liberties.
Police officials said the message reflects the force’s commitment to upholding constitutional guarantees and ensuring humane policing standards. “Respect for human rights is fundamental to maintaining trust between law enforcement and the public,” an officer said, noting that the department has been conducting regular training sessions on rights-based policing.
Across Jammu and Kashmir, several institutions, NGOs and educational bodies organised awareness campaigns and discussions to mark the day. Participants reiterated the need for continued efforts to safeguard human rights through transparent governance, accountability in public institutions and active community engagement.
