“When Jammu district is entirely covered and meters installed in all the rural as well as urban areas, we will install smart meters in all the rest of nine districts of Jammu It would require around 10.89 lakh meters for all the districts of Jammu province,” he added.

Pertinently, a series of protests broke out in various areas of Jammu City and rural belt against the smart meter installation following claims that the electricity consumers are getting excessive electricity usage bills. However, the JPDCL has ruled out the claims saying these meters are error free and work without human intervention.

As the suspicion about these smart meters had triggered anger among the people, the civil administration in Jammu district ordered tehsildars and police to assist the installation of the meters.

“…. all tehsildars of district Jammu ordered to provide the magisterial support to JPDCL and police authorities during the installation of smart electricity meters within their territorial jurisdiction so that fixed targets are accomplished on time,” reads an order issued by the Additional District Magistrate, Jammu, Harvinder Singh.

As per the orders, the tehsildars/executive magistrate shall liaise with Superintendent of Police of concerned zone for effective magisterial assistance.

Atleast 21 tehsildars of Jammu districts have been assigned the task to assist teams installing smart meters along with the police in the wake of protests by the people in various areas since last several days.
