Srinagar, Sept 4: At the International Conference on Recent Advances in Pain (ICRA 2025) in Kolkata, Dr. Hinanna Berjis, a Srinagar-based pain physician has earned acclaim for her innovative approach to pain management - combining mindfulness and aromatherapy to significantly reduce chronic pain in a young patient.

The results of the case of a young female she presented were astonishing- within four weeks, the patient’s pain severity dropped nearly by half, her sleep improved, and her energy returned. The audience of international experts praised the work for its clarity and promise. Her case was a paradigm shift in pain medicine. “Pain may be inevitable, but suffering is not,” she said. “With the right approach, we can retrain the brain to experience life differently.”

Dr Berjis said traditionally, pain management has relied on medications, injections, or surgeries to reduce symptoms. "But global science is moving toward pain modulation therapies that alter how pain signals are processed and perceived in the nervous system," she said. "Techniques like spinal cord stimulation, scrambler therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness are showing that the brain’s interpretation of pain can be reshaped."

With an MD in Anesthesiology and a fellowship in Pain Management, she brings years of clinical expertise. She also holds a certificate from the University of Minnesota in Mindfulness and Aromatherapy, enabling her to blend evidence-based complementary practices into mainstream pain care. “We believe in empowering patients,” Dr. Berjis explained. “Pain isn’t always about damage in the body. Often, it’s about how the brain is amplifying signals. By calming that system, we give people back their lives.”
