Infrastructure gaps addressed through strategic policy interventions in Higher Education: Government
Srinagar, Feb 5: The J&K Economic Survey 2025-26 tabled in the J&K Legislative Assembly on Thursday stated that the J&K Government was undertaking a transformative journey in higher education in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
It reads that the government was focusing on improving quality, accessibility, and employability.
“Curriculum restructuring forms the cornerstone of this transformation, with universities introducing programs under the Four-Year Undergraduate Model, offering multi-disciplinary and flexible curricula,” it reads.
It reads that the adoption of the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) system has enhanced academic flexibility, enabling students to accumulate and transfer credits seamlessly.
“J&K government was proactively addressing challenges in higher education including infrastructure gaps and the need for market-relevant, practical-based courses through strategic policy interventions and targeted investments,” it reads.
These efforts aim to create a robust higher education ecosystem that fulfills the aspirations of students besides contributing to regional development and national prosperity.
“By fostering a culture of academic excellence, inclusivity, and innovation, the Government seeks to empower the youth to become future-ready leaders capable of thriving in a rapidly evolving global economy,” it reads.
Notably J&K has 151 government degree colleges, including 6 engineering colleges, out of which 51 were established post 2019.
“Institutional restructuring and accreditation are key priorities under NEP 2020. Currently, 74 colleges are NAAC-accredited, with 16 more under process,” it reads.
It states that research and innovation have been strengthened through the creation of 30 research hubs, fostering multi-disciplinary research across institutions.
“To enhance employability, 56 government degree colleges now offer skill courses aligned with the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). Autonomy has been granted to three colleges, promoting innovation in curriculum design,” it reads.
