Indigenous Himgiri frigate delivered to Navy

New Delhi, Jul 31: The Indian Navy took delivery of Himgiri (Yard 3022), the third Nilgiri-class stealth frigate under Project 17A and the first built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. Designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed under the Warship Overseeing Team (Kolkata), Himgiri features advanced stealth, automation, and combat capabilities.

It marks a generational upgrade over the earlier Shivalik-class, with a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system and a modern weapons suite including surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, a 76 mm gun, and close-in weapon systems.

Reviving the legacy of the decommissioned INS Himgiri, the new frigate has 75% indigenous content, involved over 200 MSMEs, and created employment for thousands. Its delivery underscores the Navy’s continued push for Aatmanirbharta in warship design and construction.
