Indian woman cadet who was onboard Israeli vessel seized by Iran returns home

April 18, 2024, New Delhi: Ms Ann Tessa Joseph, an Indian deck cadet hailing from Thrissur, Kerala, has successfully returned home with the assistance of the Indian Mission in Tehran and the Iranian Government.

Ms Joseph was part of the Indian crew aboard the container vessel MSC Aries, and she landed safely at the Cochin International Airport this afternoon. Upon her arrival, she was warmly received by the Regional Passport Officer of Cochin.

The Indian Mission in Tehran continues to actively engage with the remaining 16 Indian crew members still on board the MSC Aries. Thankfully, all crew members are reported to be in good health and remain in contact with their families back in India.

Additionally, efforts are underway to ensure the well-being of the remaining crew members, with ongoing coordination between the Indian Mission and Iranian authorities, the official press release of MEA said.

Earlier discussions between External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian underscored the importance of resolving the situation swiftly and ensuring the safety of all crew members. The Indian mission was granted permission to meet the Indian crew at the port where the vessel is currently being held under Iranian security.

The MSC Aries, flagged under Portugal, encountered a tumultuous situation when it was seized by Iranian troops on April 13 while navigating the Strait of Hormuz.

The vessel, owned by Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer, carried seventeen Indian sailors among its crew, along with five individuals from other countries.

Indian authorities are in contact with the Iranian authorities to secure the safe return of Indian citizens.
