Indian Navy swiftly responds to Hijacking incidents in Arabian Sea

New Delhi, Dec 16: In a quick decisive move, Indian Navy's Mission Deployed platforms have sprung into action to address a maritime incident involving the hijacking of the Malta-flagged vessel MV Ruen in the Arabian Sea.

The vessel, carrying 18 crew members, issued a distress call on the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) portal on December 14, 2023, reporting an unauthorized boarding by approximately six unknown individuals.

In response to the unfolding crisis, the Indian Navy redirected its Naval Maritime Patrol aircraft, and engaged in surveillance in the region in the Gulf of Aden.

These assets were mobilized to locate and assist the MV Ruen. The aircraft conducted an overflight of the hijacked vessel during the early hours of December 15, 2023, located it and Indian Navy aircraft have since maintained continuous monitoring of the vessel, which is currently heading toward the coast of Somalia.

Taking proactive measures, an Indian Navy warship, strategically deployed for anti-piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden, intercepted the MV Ruen in the early hours of December 16, 2023.

The evolving situation is under close observation, with coordination efforts extended to other relevant agencies and the Maritime Security Task Force (MNF) operating in the region.

The Indian Navy emphasizes its commitment to serving as a rapid first responder in the area, dedicated to ensuring the safety of merchant shipping in collaboration with international partners and friendly foreign nations. The situation continues to be monitored closely for further developments.
