New Delhi, Sep 09: The 20th edition of the India-US joint military exercise, YUDH ABHYAS-2024, began today at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan. The exercise, running from September 9 to 22, 2024, has been an annual event since 2004, alternating between India and the USA.

This year’s exercise sees a significant expansion in both troop numbers and equipment. The Indian Army is participating with 600 personnel from a battalion of the RAJPUT Regiment, along with members from other units. The US Army is represented by a similar-sized contingent from the 1-24 Battalion of the Alaska-based 11th Airborne Division.

The main goal of the exercise is to improve the joint military capabilities of both nations in counter-terrorism operations, particularly in semi-desert environments, following the guidelines of Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The drills will include joint responses to terrorist actions, planning, and combined field exercises that simulate real-world counter-terrorism missions.

YUDH ABHYAS will allow both armies to share best practices in tactics and procedures, enhancing interoperability, cooperation, and camaraderie. The exercise will also strengthen defence ties and further bolster the relationship between India and the US.
