The fourth meeting of the High-level Core Group between the Maldives and India convened in New Delhi on Friday, reinforcing the commitment to bilateral cooperation. Discussions encompassed various areas of mutual interest, including development and defence cooperation, reflecting the depth of the strategic partnership. Following the meeting, it was reaffirmed that the Indian government will replace military personnel with civilian experts, a process initiated two months ago. President Mohamed Muizzu's administration, while previously signalling a shift towards stronger ties with China, has set a deadline for the withdrawal of Indian military troops. Nonetheless, India remains steadfast in its commitment to support the Maldives' socio-economic development, as evidenced by increased budget allocations for development assistance in the interim budget for 2024-25.
