New Delhi, Nov 17: India, reacting to the development, said it had noted the verdict. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said India “has noted the verdict announced by the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh concerning former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.” It added that, “As a close neighbour, India remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including in peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country. We will always engage constructively with all stakeholders to that end.” Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh, which found her guilty of crimes against humanity linked to last year’s crackdown on student-led protests.

The tribunal had earlier declared Hasina a fugitive and described her in its ruling as the “mastermind” of the violence that left hundreds of protesters dead.

The case continues to generate sharp political debate both within Bangladesh and abroad. She has been living in exile in India since her removal from office and has repeatedly rejected the charges as politically motivated. In a detailed statement issued after the verdict, the 78-year-old Awami League leader called the tribunal “biased” and “rigged,” alleging it was formed by an “unelected government with no democratic mandate.” She claimed the ruling reflected the “murderous intent” of hardliners in the interim administration and reiterated her readiness to face trial before an international court.
