India, Maldives sign several MoUs

New Delhi, Oct 7: India and the Maldives continue to bolster their longstanding relationship through a series of landmark initiatives and agreements aimed at fostering economic cooperation, social development, and security collaboration.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, warmly receiving President Muizzu at Hyderabad House, emphasised the centuries-old bond between the two countries. In his address, Modi highlighted India’s consistent role in supporting the Maldives, reflecting the ethos of India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and “SAGAR” (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision. One of the significant milestones during the visit was the launch of the RuPay card in the Maldives, a move aimed at enhancing financial cooperation between the two nations. Prime Minister Modi announced plans to connect both countries through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the near future, further easing cross-border transactions.

The inauguration of the redeveloped Hanimaadhoo International Airport also marked a new chapter in the Maldives’ infrastructure development. This strategic project, supported by India, is set to boost connectivity and trade. Prime Minister Modi reiterated that the Greater Male Connectivity Project would also be expedited, alongside the development of a new commercial port in Thilafushi.

Furthering its commitment to social welfare, India handed over 700 social housing units in the Maldives, built under EXIM Bank Buyers Credit facilities. This project aims to address the housing crisis in the Maldives and improve living standards for its citizens. Additionally, India’s consistent support during crises, such as providing essential commodities, drinking water during natural calamities, and vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic, was highlighted as an example of its unwavering role as the Maldives’ first responder.

During the highly anticipated state visit of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu to India, both countries showcased their commitment to further cementing ties. The visit, marked by mutual goodwill, underscored India’s role as a steadfast partner for the island nation in times of need, particularly in its ongoing struggle with debt.

The visit also saw the signing and renewal of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), strengthening institutional ties and bilateral cooperation:

An MoU between Rashtriya Raksha University of India and the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement of the Maldives to promote law enforcement training.

An MoU between the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of India and the Anti-Corruption Commission of the Maldives to foster collaboration in preventing and combating corruption.

Renewal of the MoU between the National Judicial Academy of India and the Judicial Service Commission of the Maldives for capacity-building programs for Maldivian judicial officers.

Renewal of an MoU between India and the Maldives on sports and youth affairs, furthering people-to-people engagement and cultural exchanges.

Maldives President Muizzu expressed his nation’s deep appreciation for India’s sustained assistance and solidarity. During his visit, he paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, reaffirming the shared values of peace and cooperation between the two countries. Earlier, he was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan by President Droupadi Murmu. Despite earlier diplomatic tensions between the two nations, the visit marks a reset in relations. President Muizzu’s administration, which had initially called for the withdrawal of India’s technical military team, has now re-emphasized the importance of India in the Maldives’ foreign policy and economic development. Diplomatic exchanges have resumed in full swing, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other senior officials played a key role in rebuilding trust.

India’s ongoing support to the Maldives extends beyond diplomatic goodwill. India contributed $100 million in development projects last year and postponed the repayment of two loans to ease the Maldives’ fiscal burden. In an interview prior to his visit, President Muizzu expressed confidence that India, as one of Maldives’ biggest development partners, would continue to help find solutions to the country’s economic challenges.

Accompanied by a high-level delegation, President Muizzu will also visit Mumbai and Bengaluru for business engagements, further deepening economic ties. As noted by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, this visit signifies the importance India places on its relationship with the Maldives and is expected to generate further momentum for cooperation and people-to-people ties.

With these developments, the partnership between India and the Maldives is poised to move forward with renewed energy and mutual respect, marking yet another chapter in the rich history of collaboration between the two neighbours.
