India issues advisory as Iran suspends visa waiver for Indian passport holders
New Delhi, Nov 18: The Government of India has issued a public advisory following reports of Indian nationals being lured to Iran on false promises of employment or onward travel to third countries.
According to official inputs, many individuals were deceived into travelling to Iran by misusing the visa waiver facility available to ordinary Indian passport holders.
Upon arrival, several were allegedly kidnapped and held for ransom.
In response, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has suspended the visa waiver facility for ordinary Indian passport holders with effect from 22 November 2025.
From this date onward, Indian nationals will be required to obtain a valid visa to enter or transit through Iran. The suspension aims to curb the exploitation of visa-free entry by criminal networks.
The government has urged all citizens to exercise utmost caution and avoid dealing with agents who promise visa-free travel or onward transit to third countries via Iran.
Travellers intending to visit Iran have been strongly advised to verify all travel-related information and ensure they obtain appropriate documentation through authorised channels.
Authorities have reiterated that necessary efforts are underway to assist affected Indian nationals and prevent further exploitation.
The Ministry has emphasised that vigilance and responsible travel planning are essential to safeguarding the welfare of Indian citizens abroad.
